Aromatherapy is the name given to a unique branch of herbal medicine that uses the medicinal and therapeutic properties of the oils found in various plants.

How Aromatherapy works inhaling through the nose?

Inhalation is the quickest method by which essential oils enter the body and take effect. The surrounding warm, moist air carries the tiny molecules up the nose as we breathe in. This wonderful apparatus is the only organ with direct access to the brain, influencing our feelings and actions.

There are minute hairs called cilia right at the top of the nose, from which special signals commence their journey to the brain. The air we breathe in passes over the cilia and a signal is transmitted from the receptor cells to the olfactory bulb and to sections of the brain to process the information. Neurochemicals are then released which are passed on via the nervous system to relax or stimulate depending on the aroma. They directly affect the body physically, which is why essential oils are so effective for different body aliments

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are concentrated compounds extracted from plants, twigs, leaves or berries. The aromatic compounds extracted give each essential oil has its own unique chemical composition. Essential oils are extracted by a process called distillation, which turns the “essence” of a plant into a liquefied form for various medicinal and recreational use.

Essential oils are often used in aromatherapy, a form of alternative medicine that employs plant extracts to support health and well-being. Essential oils are most commonly used in the practice of aromatherapy, in which they are inhaled through various methods. Inhaling the aromas from essential oils can stimulate areas of your limbic system, which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviors, sense of smell, and long-term memory.
